Maddinson ruled out of 'A' tour

New South Welshman to fly home after damaging tendon during drawn series opener with India A

Australia A batsman Nic Maddinson has been ruled out of the remainder of his side’s India A tour after sustaining a tendon injury to his right index finger.

Maddinson damaged the finger while taking an outfield catch during India A’s second innings last Saturday.

“Nic’s finger will need to be immobilised in a splint for the next few weeks so unfortunately he will not be able to participate in the remaining four-day match of this tour,” said Australia A physio David Beakley.

“He will return earlier to Australia so that he can continue his rehabilitation in Sydney and prepare for his upcoming cricket commitments with New South Wales.”

Selectors have opted not to replace Maddinson, with South Australian batsman Callum Ferguson likely to come into the XI for the next four-day match, against India A on Wednesday in Chennai.

Maddinson is no stranger to finger injuries; the 23-year-old left-hander broke a finger while training with Royal Challengers Bangalore in last year’s Indian Premier League.

After making a duck in the first innings against India A last week, he bounced back with a quick-fire 37 not out but will now have to wait until the Australian summer to get another opportunity to impress with the bat.

A gifted, aggressive batsman, Maddinson has scored six hundreds in 46 first-class matches since bursting onto the Bupa Sheffield Shield scene in the 2010-11 season.

The Sydney Sixers opener has since played two T20 internationals for Australia and has been a regular with Australia A.

Australia A four-day squad for India tour: Usman Khawaja (c, QLD), Matthew Wade (VIC), Sean Abbott (NSW), Ashton Agar (WA), Cameron Bancroft (WA), Joe Burns (QLD), Andrew Fekete (TAS), Callum Ferguson (SA), Peter Handscomb (VIC), Travis Head (SA), Stephen O'Keefe (NSW), Gurinder Sandhu (NSW), Marcus Stoinis (VIC).
