Australians excited by ‘Niiice Garrrry’ fever

Jackson Bird says he’ll probably join in ‘world record attempt’ at the MCG during the Boxing Day Test

It's been the sound of the 2016-17 summer of cricket, the catch cry of Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade that could become more iconic than Ian Healy's famous "Bowled Warnie" of the 1990s.

Wade's support behind the stumps this summer for off-spinner Nathan Lyon, nicknamed Garry in honour of former Australian Rules footballer Garry Lyon, has sparked memes, memorabilia and thousands of imitations at grounds around the country.

Even Wade's teammates have jumped on board, and there were several cries of "niiice Garyyy" during their training session on Friday.

But things are set to be taken to all new levels with thousands of spectators promising to shout "niiice Garyyy" in unison during the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

Wade gets vocal behind the stumps

A Facebook event has almost 8500 confirmed attendees and another 10,000 other "interested" people who are planning a "world record attempt" for the most people yelling "niiice Garyyy" at once, after the spinner's third ball of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan.

Aussie paceman Jackson Bird said the team have loved how quickly the phenomenon has taken off.

Quick Single: Relaxed Warner maintaining faith

"I think it's pretty funny ... I'll probably join in as well," he said on Saturday.

"It's good to see the crowd getting behind Gazza and Wadey. It's a bit of a running joke in our group now, so we all think it's pretty funny."

Warner sticking with his proven method
