Redbacks' steady start halted as batsman is hospitalised

South Australia made it to 2-136 on day one of their Bupa Sheffield Shield clash with New South Wales at the SCG before Redbacks batsman Phil Hughes was struck with a short ball from Blues paceman Sean Abbott.

Hughes was 63 not out as he attempted to press his claims for a national recall for Australia's Test series against India starting in Brisbane next week when he was hit, collapsing moments later.

He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst after receiving CPR at the venue.

Earlier, Mark Cosgrove (32) was dismissed by a brilliant diving catch by Stephen O'Keefe off the bowling of Nathan Lyon, while another Test hopeful, Callum Ferguson, was caught behind off the bowling of Doug Bollinger for 28.

Tom Cooper was the other not out batsman, on five.
