Legends knocked out of ODI GOAT

The battle is getting fierce and producing some surprises in the search for the greatest ODI player ever

The search for the greatest one-day international of all time has taken another two huge scalps, with champions Ricky Ponting and Wasim Akram both knocked out in the Round of 16.

In one of the closest match-ups so far, Sri Lanka legend Sanath Jayasuriya took down Australia's three-time World Cup-winning batsman Ricky Ponting with 52 per cent of the more than 24,000 votes.

It was a see-sawing battle between two prolific 50-over run-scorers, with the pair swapping the lead several times before the Sri Lankan walked away victorious.

Jayasuriya has been on an epic run against Australian batsmen, thumping Mark Waugh in the first round 77-23 and then taking care of his brother Steve 61-39 in the Round of 32.

On the other side of the draw, former teammates, and perhaps ODI cricket's most lethal new ball partners, Waqar Younis and Wasim went head-to head in the Round of 16.

Wasim had defeated fellow left-armer Mitchell Starc and colossal paceman Joel Garner in the first two rounds, while Waqar had beaten Australia's Mitchell Johnson and rapid speedster Shoaib Akhtar.

Despite suffering an early deficit, Waqar was overpowered his partner in crime, taking out the win 57-43 with more than 13,500 votes cast.

Waqar will now face either Imran Khan or Curtly Ambrose in the quarter-finals, while Jayasuriya will take on the winner of the Virat Kohli v Inzamam-ul-Haq clash.

In a battle of two of the best finishers in ODI history, Michael Bevan defeated Mike Hussey by the narrowest of margins in the Round of 64.

In true Bevan spirit, the cerebral southpaw left his run late, surging past Hussey to pinch victory from the jaws of defeat and win 51-49.

Muthiah Muralidaran, who is currently locked in a battle with fierce rival Shane Warne, edged out mercurial Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi by just two per cent with 51 per cent of the 21,731 fan votes

Other notable upsets have been Inzamum's triumph over South African allrounder Jacques Kallis, with the former Pakistan captain winning 57-43 in the Round of 64.

After downing Black Caps master blaster Brendon McCullum, Adam Gilchrist ran into a brick wall called Kumar Sangakkara.

The genius Australia wicketkeeper-batsman was no match for the Sri Lankan, losing 40-60 with more than 25,000 fans voting.

Sangakkara, who beat India limited-overs captain MS Dhoni in the first round, now faces one of the generation's greatest batsmen, South African AB de Villiers in the Round of 16.

The #ODIGOAT is cricket.com.au's knockout competition to determine who the fans think is the greatest ODI player of all time.
