Pakistan batsmen send records tumbling

A host of long-standing marks fell as ODI cricket returned to the subcontinental nation

375 Number of runs scored by Pakistan in the first ODI against Zimbabwe in Lahore. It is the highest recorded total in all the one-day internationals played in Pakistan. The previous record was 4-374 by India against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup in 2008.

709 Number of runs scored in the match. Pakistan scored 375 and Zimbabwe in reply piled up 334, which added up to the highest match aggregate in all Pakistan-based ODIs. The previous record was 693 in the match between Pakistan and India in Karachi in 2004.

70 Number of balls Shoaib Malik needed to score his century, the fastest of his career and second fastest at Gaddafi Stadium behind Ijaz Ahmed’s 68-ball hundred against India in 1997. It was also Malik’s first 50-plus score in 31 innings and more than five years. The last time he reached 50 in ODIs was when he scored 128 against India in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy. Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya's 55-ball effort against Bangladesh in Karachi in 2008 remains the fastest century ever scored in Pakistan.

170 The partnership between Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez, the highest opening stand in ODIs at Gaddafi Stadium. The previous record belonged to Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt who accumulated 151 against Bangladesh in 2008. The third-wicket stand of 201 between Shoaib Malik and Haris Sohail that followed meant it was first time Pakistan had two 150-plus partnerships in an ODI.

174 Number of matches Elton Chigumbura needed to score his maiden century in ODIs. Only Shaun Pollock (285), Mark Boucher (220) and Steve Waugh (187) needed more games to register their first century. Incidentally, Pollock’s hundred came for Africa XI against Asia XI in 2007, in a match in which he batted alongside Chigumbura.

350.00 Elton Chigumbura’s strike-rate against fast bowler Mohammad Sami during the first ODI, courtesy of 35 runs from 10 balls with four boundaries and three sixes. In the T20Is, Chigumbura had scored 19 off six balls and eight from five off Sami, meaning in three matches so far on this tour he has yielded 62 off 21 at a strike-rate of 295.23 from the Pakistani quick.

334 Runs scored by Zimbabwe, their highest team total against a Test-playing team, beating 9-329 against New Zealand at Bulawayo in 2011. Their overall record is 7-351 against Kenya at Mombasa in 2009.

445 The win against Zimbabwe in Lahore was Pakistan’s 445th in ODIs, the second most by any team. Only Australia (529) has won more ODIs. India with 444 wins is at third.

0 Number of Pakistan captains who have scored back-to-back centuries in ODIs. Azhar Ali fell 21 runs short of achieving this feat. He had scored 101 against Bangladesh in Mirpur last month, he followed it with 79 against Zimbabwe in Lahore.

1 Mohammad Hafeez (86), Azhar Ali (79), Shoaib Malik (112) and Haris Sohail (89) marked the first instance of Pakistan’s top four all scoring more than 50 in an ODI. It was also first time in ODI history that four batsmen scored 75-plus in the same innings.
