Best in state honoured at awards nights

Australia's newest Test players win top honours at state cricket award ceremonies while English women dominate

Peter Nevill, Adam Voges and Fawad Ahmed - the three uncapped players in Australia's Test squad for the winter tours - have been honoured by their respective states at their end-of-season award ceremonies.

Nevill won the Steve Waugh Medal on Thursday night as the NSW Blues player of the year after scoring 764 runs in a watershed season in the Bupa Sheffield Shield.

His new Test teammates Voges and Ahmed were also honoured during the week; Voges won the Laurie Sawle Medal on Wednesday night as Western Australia's player of the year while Ahmed picked up Victoria's Bill Lawry Medal last week after surging into Australia's Test squad with 48 Shield wickets for the season.

Callum Ferguson was awarded the Neil Dansie Medal last weekend as South Australia's player of the year, while Tasmania fast-bowler Andrew Fekete capped off a breakthrough season on Thursday night by sweeping the Tigers' awards, including the Ricky Ponting Medal as player of the year.

Queensland Cricket's awards night will be held on April 11.

There was a strong international flavour at the awards nights this year, particularly in the women's game.

England captain Charlotte Edwards swept the Western Fury's awards, including the Zoe Goss Medal, while her England teammate Heather Knight was named the Tasmanian Roar's player of the year.

Another Englishwoman, Sarah Taylor, won the Andrea McCauley Trophy as player of the year for the South Australian Scorpions.
