Nevill equals List A 'keeping world record

NSW gloveman sets new Australian benchmark and becomes fourth player ever to effect eight dismissals in a one-day game

Test aspirant Peter Nevill has done his Magellan Ashes hopes no harm after he equaled the List A wicketkeeping world record in NSW's win over the Cricket Australia XI on Sunday.

Nevill played his part in eight dismissals at Hurstville Oval, claiming six catches and affecting two stumpings in the 93-run win.

The 30-year-old was flawless behind the stumps as Australia coach and national selector Darren Lehmann watched on from the sidelines, with his match-sealing leg-side stumping off Nic Maddinson a particularly impressive piece of work.

Nevill's mark equals the eight set by Somerset's Derek Taylor in 1982 and matched by Boland's Steve Palframan in 1997-98 and then again by James Piper in 2001 for Worcestershire.

Nevill has also eclipsed the Australian record of six held by former Western Australia gloveman Ryan Campbell (three times), Queensland's Wade Seccombe, NSW's Brad Haddin and WA's Adam Gilchrist (each once).

Magnificent Maddinson makes light work of CA XI

"I didn't realise that was the case but that's more of a reflection of the bowling than the wicketekeeping," a humble Nevill said post-match after being informed of the record.

Maddinson praised the efforts of his star 'keeper and the work he's put in off the field.

"He's been keeping really well," Maddinson said. "He's put in a lot of work especially over our off-season and pre-season so it's no surprise.

"I think he's back to the standard he expects."

Incumbent Test 'keeper Matthew Wade's lean trot with the bat has put the wicketkeeper's spot for the first Ashes clash at the Gabba up in the air.

Nevill was a victim of Australia's cleanout after their fifth straight Test loss and crushing innings-defeat in Hobart last November but has the backing of Test champions Gilchrist and Michael Slater.

"I think we go back to the guy who's (the best) gloveman," Slater said on Sports Sunday.

"I read some quotes from Ian Healy. Now he knows a little bit about 'keeping and he said 'let's go for the gloveman, let's not make excuses for the top six batters doing the job and expect the 'keeper to do what Gilchrist did'.

"It's like looking for another Warnie – you don't find them.

"Get the guy who can take all (the catches).

"(Nevill) averaged over 50 for NSW last year. There's nothing wrong with his batting.

"He might not be an aggressor but he does a fantastic job.

"He might not talk as much as Wade but I'm not sure the talk from Wade is appealing to some of his teammates."
