The records that de Kock demolished

South Africa opener in devastating form as he compiles an innings for the ages

Quinton de Kock has rewritten the record books with a staggering 178 from 113 deliveries in South Africa's victory over Australia at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Quick Single: Hurricane de Kock destroys Australia

With the Proteas chasing 295 for victory, de Kock's magnificent innings ensured his side got home with a quite remarkable 14.3 overs to spare.

It was one hell of an innings: Smith

As well as playing a match-winning hand, the 23-year-old left-hander broke a stack of records along the way:

Fastest to 11 ODI hundreds

Of the 35 players in history to register 11 ODI hundreds, de Kock has taken the fewest matches to reach that number – just 65. He pips regular teammate Hashim Amla, who was previously quickest, reaching his 11th century in his 66th ODI.

Highest score in South Africa v Australia ODIs

De Kock's innings is the highest-ever in the rich ODI history between the two sides, surpassing Herschelle Gibbs' 175 in the unforgettable '438' match of 2006 in Johannesburg. Ricky Ponting scored 164 in the same match – the highest by an Australian against South Africa. Only Gary Kirsten, who made 188no against the UAE in the 1996 World Cup, has posted a higher score for the Proteas in ODI cricket.

Australia destroyed by de Kock classic

Most sixes in South Africa v Australia ODIs

De Kock launched an incredible aerial assault on Australia's bowlers, creaming 11 sixes at a rate of a tick over one every 10 balls. At one point against the leg-spin of Adam Zampa, he hit three in a row. His 11 sixes are the most in South Africa v Australia ODIs, breaking Ponting's mark of nine in the aforementioned innings. Only AB de Villiers, who hit 16 during his world record 149 against West Indies last year, has hit more sixes in an ODI innings for the Proteas. For good measure, de Kock also hit 16 fours.

Seventh-fastest 150 in ODI history

De Kock reached 50 from 38 balls, 100 from 74 balls and 150 from 101 balls – each fifty coming quicker than the previous. Only six players in ODI history have reached 150 from fewer deliveries: de Villiers (64), Australian Shane Watson (83), Kiwi Luke Ronchi (92), Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya (95), Ponting (99) and Gibbs (100).

It was just my day, I guess: De Kock

Hundreds before turning 24

By scoring 11 hundreds at the age of 23, de Kock is in exclusive company; the only other ODI players to make that many three-figure scores at such a young age are Indian superstars Virat Kohli (13) and Sachin Tendulkar (11).
