Aussie skipper pens new Big Bash deal

Stand-in Australia captain Rachael Haynes will remain with the Sydney Thunder for another two seasons

Rachael Haynes has followed her appointment as stand-in Australian cricket captain by re-signing with Rebel WBBL side Sydney Thunder.

Haynes, who will lead Australia in the Commonwealth Bank Women's Ashes in Meg Lanning's absence this summer, has signed a two-year contract extension.

"It was an easy decision in the end,” said Haynes. "I enjoy being part of the club and the success we’ve had so the opportunity to be part of the squad again with this playing group is really exciting.”

The opening bat has scored 614 runs for the Thunder in two seasons opening the batting alongside West Indian captain Stafanie Taylor.

"I think one of the great things about the competition is that it was very well thought out and put together well so it naturally attracted the best players in the world," she said.

"From the outset Thunder has been one club with two teams so to attract sponsors to sponsor the whole club is a great fit. To have HomeWorld onboard is fantastic and we’re looking forward to their continuing support."

She credited the Twenty20 tournament as helping her rise up the Australian ranks after her three-and-a-half-year absence from the national set-up ended in February.

"I think the WBBL played a big role," Haynes said.

"Last year I played OK in the WNCL and then started hitting them well in the WBBL and was playing some good cricket against a high calibre of players."

Haynes was last week named as Australian leader to take on England, after Lanning was ruled out of the series against England due to a shoulder injury.

The third WBBL season begins in early December, with the Thunder to begin their campaign against Melbourne Renegades on December 9 at North Sydney Oval.
