Farrell snares Super League five-fa

Australia seamer leads Surrey to victory with a stunning display in the Super League

Australia seamer Rene Farrell has become just the second player to take a five-wicket haul in the England women’s Super League.

Playing for the Surrey Stars, Farrell tore through the Lancashire batting line-up to finish with a match-winning 5-26, helping her team seal a 33-run victory at Old Trafford.

Quick single: Osborne focussed on WNCL glory

With Lancashire chasing 134 for their first win of the season, the Thunder would have fancied their chances at 2-75 in the 12th over with star internationals Amy Satterthwaite and Sarah Taylor at the crease.

But three blows in the space of eight Farrell deliveries turned the match on its head. First, Farrell removed Sattherthwaite with a superb delivery that bowled the New Zealander through her legs.

In her next over, she deceived the dangerous Taylor who miscued a paddle on 34 (30), then had Ellie Threlkeld stumped chasing a leg-side wide with her next delivery.

And none of the Thunder’s remaining batters reached double figures as Farrell returned to clean up the tail, ending the match in style with a diving catch off her own bowling.

"I feel pretty stoked,” Farrell told Surrey Cricket after the match.

"It’s nice to be back playing some cricket and over here in England.

"I’m loving playing for the Surrey Stars at the moment and two victories from two matches is just fantastic."

Quick single: Gardner signs on with the Scorpions

It was only the second five-wicket haul since the Super League was introduced last year, and the first by a Surrey player.

The match was only Farrell’s second official outing since she announced her retirement from one-day internationals earlier this year.

The 30-year-old Sydney Thunder star called time on her 44-match ODI career in April, but the NSW native stated her desire to continue representing Australia in the Test and T20I arenas this summer.

Quick single: Cheatle eyeing Ashes return

The Super League is a perfect chance for Farrell to capture the attention of national selectors as they mull the squad to take on England in the Commonwealth Bank Women’s Ashes which will see the fierce rivals face off in three ODIs, one Test and three T20Is between October 22 and November 21.

Earlier in the match, Farrell’s Australian teammate Jess Jonassen picked up two wickets with her left-arm spin, finishing her four overs with 2-27.

The pair are among five Australians taking part in the Super League, with Ellyse Perry, Elyse Villani and Kristen Beams all representing Loughborough Lightning.
