Hossain hunting spot for Aussie showdown

Fast bowler back on track after bizarre injury and pushing his case to face Australia in home Tests while perfecting his 'butterfly' ball

Bangaldesh fast bowler Rubel Hossain has resumed training in a bid for a Test berth against the Australians later this month.

Hossain had required surgery on his jaw that was broken in a freak accident in the Bangladesh team's hotel during the Champions Trophy in June.

The bowler collided with a door at the Bangladesh team's Birmingham hotel following their Champions Trophy semi-final defeat to India. It remains unclear exactly how the injury occurred.

Quick Single: No tours without MOU deal: Smith

The 27-year-old quick remains Bangladesh's most experienced Test bowler in an expanded squad that has been taking part in an intense training and fitness camp in preparation for the series against Australia, and a tour of South Africa that is to follow.

"I am fully fit now and bowled off a full run-up today," Hossain said. "There is still a lot of time. Yes, I missed a few sessions but I will try to cover it."

His record in the five-day format is not the most flattering, with 32 wickets at 77.93 from 24 matches, but made a comeback to the Test side in January against New Zealand, and is now working with West Indies legend Courtney Walsh, Bangladesh's bowling coach.

"I had a few breaks in my career which has been the main reason why I am yet to establish my place in the Test side, as you see my performance in Test cricket is not that good," Hossain told reporters from the team's training camp at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpir.

"I also know the reasons and I am working hard to overcome those and trying to improve myself as a bowler in the longer format as well.

"I can learn many things from (Walsh) because his Test record is outstanding. I will work to learn the craft of how I can maintain a good line and length and how I can be successful against the big teams."

Hossain has also been working on his "butterfly" ball – a slower delivery that is gripped high in the fingertips and achieves dramatic dip through a lack of rotation, meaning it 'floats' to the batsman 'like a butterfly'.

A useful change-up in the shorter formats where Hossain has enjoyed more success, he is not expecting to unleash that on the Aussies should he earn Test selection.

"I bowled with a different action against New Zealand and I will try it in the next matches," he said.

"It's okay now, I will also do it in the (Bangladesh Premier League T20 competition) and in the South Africa series if I get the chance."

Walsh has been winning plaudits for his work with Bangladesh's leading seamers recently.

Star bowler Mustafizur Rahman has been working closely with the West Indies legend to regain his spark following shoulder surgery.

"It is too early to say anything apart from the fact that he is responding very well in the training sessions," Walsh told Cricbuzz after a one-on-one session with Mustafizur.

"We are trying to make him bowl (from) close to the wicket but that is not the only thing as we are trying some other stuff as well."

Kamrul Islam, a right-arm quick, says Walsh has already provided useful feedback that’s seen promising development.

"With the guidance of Walsh, I have improved my balance while bowling and also have made some technical amendments that I hope would make my bowling more effective," Kamrul said.

"I could not deliver inswingers but currently I have been trying to master it.

"As a bowler, I have been trying to perfect the skills that I have already acquired. That’s where my focus lies currently."
