Indian cricket legends reunite with BCCI

Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman to join forces in advisory roles for Indian cricket

Three of India’s most iconic batsmen – Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly – will guide India’s national team and generation next after being nominated to the Cricket Advisory Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The trio – with more than 33,000 Test runs between them – have accepted the BCCI’s invitation and will focus on reversing India’s poor away record, improving the talent pathway program and bolster the domestic cricket in a hope to steel first-class players for the rigours of international cricket.

“I am happy to note that our eminent cricketers have come forward to lend their experience and insights as we work towards a common goal of taking Indian Cricket to greater heights,” BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya said in an official statement.

“The coming generations are bound to benefit from the guidance that will be provided by these luminaries and will go a long way in strengthening our existing system.”

India have yet to name a replacement for head coach Duncan Fletcher following the Zimbabwean’s exit from the role following the 2015 Cricket World Cup, and it has been speculated that Ganguly could be in line for the top job.

While the 42-year-old’s election to the CAC might have clouded his future as a potential national coach, former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee says Ganguly could more than handle the pressures of helming an international side.

“I think he’d do a great job because he’s got a great wealth of knowledge behind him with so many games of Test match cricket, one-day cricket and Twenty20 cricket,” Lee told cricket.com.au.

“He’s been there and done it all. Will that make him a good coach? I don’t know.

“If he’s hungry for it, with his wealth of knowledge he could definitely pass it on.

“Having the right balance as a coach is the most important thing.

“(Like) people being able to play their natural role, and that all started with Trevor Bayliss.

“He’s the guy that will allow any player in the team to play their natural role.

“If Sourav Ganguly can give these (Indian) players confidence … I think he’d do a good job if he got it.”

India fly out to Bangladesh on June 7 for a one-Test and three-ODI tour but not before the new head coach is expected to be named.
