Taylor ready to put aside Ashes rivalry

England wicketkeeper hopes to help South Australia go one step further after losing the WNCL final last season

England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor says her South Australian teammates are not rubbing in Australia’s Ashes victory as they put international rivalries aside for the Women’s National Cricket League season.

Taylor has re-joined the Breezair SA Scorpions for the 50-over domestic competition, where they will aim to go one better after losing last year’s final to the Lend Lease NSW Breakers.

She will combine with Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars Megan Schutt and Sarah Coyte, with the Australian fast bowling duo fresh off the victorious Ashes tour on English soil.

“They’ve actually been pretty good about it,” Taylor said.

“They know that’s the international shirt.

“It’s like having your England cap and Aussie cap on, as soon as that’s off and your Scorps cap is on then you’ve all got a job to do and you’re fighting as one again.”

The Scorpions will begin their WNCL campaign with a grand final rematch against the Breakers next Saturday, October 10 at the WACA.

The match will see Taylor come up against four more of her Ashes foes – Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy, Rene Farrell and Alex Blackwell – and her own England teammate Laura Marsh.

The showdown will also be an interesting one for Coyte, who crossed from the Breakers to the Scorpions during the off-season.

“We’re ready for this season, we did so well last year and we obviously want to continue that,” Taylor said.

“There are a couple of new faces and I’m just happy to be back in the sun and with the girls.

“We look at our performance in the final and we did ourselves justice in getting there in the first place.

“We’ve been there now and have that experience and the younger girls’ skills are coming on as well, so if we can hopefully improve come that final that will be dividend for all the hard work we’ve done.”

The Scorpions have made two changes to their side for the 2015-16 season, signing Coyte and promoting talented local allrounder Sarah Lowe.

Coyte, 24, had spent the last five seasons with the NSW Breakers, claiming as many titles in that time, while Lowe earned a contract after an impressive grade cricket season in 2014-15.

Scorpions stalwart Lauren Ebsary will again lead the side while Taylor is again joined by fellow international, New Zealand’s Sophie Devine.

As part of the new competition structure, the Scorpions will play six 50-over matches across three weekends of cricket, with two home matches scheduled for November 21-22.
