Shakib joins legends with record five

Bangladesh's superstar allrounder becomes one of just four players to have a five-wicket haul against every other Test-playing nation

Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan needed one innings against Australia to join a select group of bowlers to have collected five-wicket hauls against every other Test-playing nation.

In his first Test against Australia and 50th overall, the left-arm spinner joined South Africa pace ace Dale Steyn and Sri Lanka spin wizards Muttiah Muralidaran and Rangana Herath in claiming a five-wicket haul against each of the other nine Test nations (excluding newcomers Afghanistan or Ireland).

Quick Single: Bangladesh v Australia, scorecard

Shakib's haul helped roll Australia for 217 in the series-opening Test in Dhaka, giving the hosts a slight edge with a 43-run lead.

Highlighting his status as the game's leading allrounder, Shakib is the only player on that list to have scored a Test century.

The batting equivalent of the feat – scoring a hundred against every other Test team – is a far more common occurrence.

Aussie tail wags but Tigers take control

Thirteen different batsmen have completed the full set, a list featuring the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara and Adam Gilchrist.

Shakib's effort in what's become a multiple-milestone match came just a day after he top-scored for the hosts with a free-wheeling 84, sharing in what could become a match-defining fourth-wicket stand with Tamim Iqbal.

Later that day, Shakib compounded a frenzied Australian meltdown before stumps by trapping nightwatchman Nathan Lyon for a duck.

Ever probing on a turning Mirpur track, he broke through again with the first ball of a new spell when Matthew Renshaw, on 45, edged to slip.

After deceiving Glenn Maxwell in flight to have him stumped for 23, he ended another promising partnership when Pat Cummins chopped on for 25.

And the feat was completed when he had Josh Hazlewood caught at short leg, notching his 16th career five-wicket haul.

Aussie sink into deep trouble on day two

Shakib's batting average now sits at a healthy 41.43 and his bowling average is 32.50 after day two, giving him the best positive average differential (the gap between a player's batting and bowling averages) since Test legend Jacques Kallis.

The 30-year-old's differential current stands at 8.93, while Kallis (batting 55.37, bowling 32.65 to give him a differential of 22.71) is bettered only by Sir Garfield Sobers (batting 57.78, bowling 34.03 for a differential of 23.74).

Shakib and Tamim – who occupy second and first spot respectively on Bangladesh's all-time Test run-scoring list – rescued the hosts from the perilous position of 3-10 with a daring stand of 155 on day one, pushing them to a competitive total of 260.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon labelled their work with the bat as "incredible".

"I think the two guys batted very brave," he said. "They took the game on, which you have to do in these type of conditions.

"I'm going to sit here and give them credit. They're two good players, they played some incredible shots out there and took the game on. Hats off to them."
