Helicopter crashes after dropping off Bangladesh star

The chopper crashed an hour after dropping Shakib al Hasan and his wife off to shoot an advertisement

Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has experienced a frightening brush with death, after a helicopter he and his wife had just ridden in crashed, killing one and injuring four others.

The chopper had safely dropped Shakib and his wife off to film a television commercial on Friday morning at the Royal Tulip Sea Resort, about 27km south of Cox's Bazar, a fishing town in Bangladesh.

But on its return journey to the capital Dhaka, the helicopter crashed near Inani beach, just north of where Shakib and his wife had landed.

"I am fine, but feel rather shocked at the news of the chopper crash," Shakib said. "But I can't really tell you anything about the crash. I was at shooting (the advertisement) at the time."

The helicopter had four passengers and the pilot on board when it crashed at about 10.30am local time near the Inani beach of the Ukhia Upazila district, according to local police.

All five were rushed to hospital but one of those on board, a Dhaka resident, later died. The cause of the crash is unknown.

Shakib, a former captain of the Bangladesh Test side, is one of the finest players his nation has produced.

The 29-year-old is the International Cricket Council’s No.1 ranked one-day international allrounder and is in second on the Test and Twenty20 International allrounder charts.

He was part of the Jamaica Tallawahs team that won the Caribbean Premier League T20 title last month.
