Marsh deserves another chance: Watson

Allrounder backs Marsh to make the most of his latest chance, while Shane Warne believes it might be his final chance

Shane Watson believes batsman Shaun Marsh deserves another shot at Test cricket after being dropped during Australia's losing Ashes campaign earlier this year.

Marsh has been recalled to the Australian side for the third Commonwealth Bank Test against New Zealand due to the hamstring injury to Usman Khawaja.

The 32-year-old averages 33 across his 15 Tests and 38.50 in 113 games of first-class cricket.

Quick single: Marsh chasing elusive home ton

He last played for Australia's Test XI in the disastrous innings-and-78-run loss to England in the fourth Test at Trent Bridge - which saw Australia for 60 in their first innings - in August, where he scored 0 and 2.

He was then dropped for the following clash at The Oval.

"I have and everyone has seen him play well and when he is at his best he is as good as there is in the world," Watson said.

"I would have hated for Shaun as a guy, because he is a lovely guy and he is incredibly talented not to get another chance after coming in for that fourth Test in those incredibly challenging conditions.

"I hope he gets a chance to show everyone again how good he is."

Watson had his own struggles with the bat during the Ashes series in England, dropped after Australia lost the opening Test in Cardiff. He has since retired from Test cricket, but is still available to play limited-overs cricket for Australia.

Quick single: Watson zeroes in on international return

He feels Marsh, like himself, still has plenty to offer Australian cricket.

"Those conditions (at Trent Bridge) were as tough as you will ever get for a batsmen in foreign conditions and Stuart Broad bowled incredibly well in those conditions," Watson said.

"It is as tough as it gets coming in at four the conditions they way they were.

"You can't just make a decision on someone on how they perform in those conditions.

"Shaun still has a lot of great cricket in front of him."

Quick single: Indian summer sealed Marsh's return, says Lehmann

Meanwhile, spin legend Shane Warne has suggested the historic day-night Test in Adelaide could be Marsh's final chance to prosper in international cricket.

"This is it for Shaun Marsh. He's got to grab this opportunity," Warne told AAP.

"We know what talent he's got, but unfortunately he hasn't quite been able to deliver consistently.

"He's a really great player so I hope he can deliver in this Test match."
