Marsh lauds more consistent Agar

New '99 club' member discusses recalled WA teammate's form and THAT run out

Fans will see that Ashton Agar has become a much more consistent bowler if he plays in the fourth Test, says West Australian teammate Shaun Marsh.

An overnight sensation in his Test debut in England 18 months ago, 21-year-old Agar is a chance to play in the dead rubber against India at the SCG next week after getting a surprise recall to the victorious Australian squad.

The problem with spinner Agar's short-lived first Test stint was that all his heroics came with the bat as he famously made 98 - the highest score by a No.11 batsman - and shared a record last-wicket partnership with Phillip Hughes at Trent Bridge.

However, Marsh says Agar has developed considerably while playing for their state, WA.

"I think his consistency has been there this year," said Marsh on arrival in Sydney on Wednesday.

"It's something he lacked last year and he'll probably say that to you.

"I think he's bowled fantastically well this year for WA.

"He's learning every game he's playing so, if he does play, he'll be ready to go."

Marsh expected the SCG conditions to determine whether Agar gets a start in the fourth Test starting on Tuesday.

Middle-order batsman Marsh admitted he'd been replaying in his mind his decision to attempt the quick single that had him run out for 99 on the final day of the drawn third Test at the MCG.

"It was one of those things, that over it was building up every ball and I was trying to get that single," he said.

"That's the way it goes. I'll take 99 every time I bat."

While he missed out on a third Test century, the innings was important as Australia took the match out of India's grasp and it eased pressure on Marsh to hold his batting spot.

Marsh doesn't expect fiery Virat Kohli's promotion to India skipper following MS Dhoni's sudden Test retirement on Tuesday night to change the way India play.

Nor does he think it will lead to an increase in sledging, given the amount of on-field chat that's gone on between the teams already in the series.

But he did warn that India could find Dhoni hard to replace.

"He (Dhoni) has been a fantastic player for India for a long period of time and him coming out at No.7 - it's going to leave a big hole in their side."
