Vics bat Redbacks out of contest

Handscomb century caps Victorian dominance on day three in Adelaide

Scorecard: South Australia v Victoria

A quartet of Victorians went on a third day scoring spree to bat the West End Redbacks out of the Bupa Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

The CommBank Bushrangers are 5-521, a first innings lead of 90 runs over the Redbacks, at stumps on Tuesday.

On a day when only four wickets fell, Peter Handscomb struck an unbeaten 100 while Marcus Stoinis (90) and David Hussey (81) fell just shy of tons.

But the milestone, and prospect of joining Chris Rogers (107) and Handscomb as century-makers, remains in reach of Dan Christian, who is 64 not out.

The Victorians have seemingly pinned their hopes of an outright win on increasing their lead early on the final day and then skittling the SA batting line-up.

The visitors showed little urgency yet still managed 320 runs in the day as they reeled in SA's first innings of 8(dec)-431.

After Redbacks quick Joe Mennie struck twice in two overs in the first hour, the SA bowlers struggled to make inroads on a flat track.

Mennie, who finished the day with 3-62, dismissed Test opener Rogers and Victorian skipper Cameron White (eight).

Rogers, whose century surely cemented his spot for the first Test against India starting on December 4 in Brisbane, added just four runs to his overnight total before cracking an uppish drive to Phil Hughes at short mid-off.

And in Mennie's next over, the paceman completed a stunning caught and bowled to rid White - the Bushranger drove back at the bowler who snared a tumbling catch at bootlace height.

The 25-year-old Stoinis was joined by veteran 37-year-old Hussey for an 89-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Stoinis, who struck eight fours and a six, was within touch of his second ton in first-class cricket but fell 10 runs short when dismissed by left-arm paceman Gary Putland (1-93).

Hussey then set his sights on a ton but feathered an edge to wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman to give Mennie his third wicket.

Handscomb and Christian united for the entire last session and the former banked his third first-class century in the final over of the day.
