Rogers scores timely ton for Victoria

Opener returns to form with Adelaide Oval century

Scorecard: South Australia v Victoria

Test opener Chris Rogers has scored a remarkable 71st first-class century for the CommBank Bushrangers against the West End Redbacks in the Bupa Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

In reply to South Australia's 7(dec)-431, the Bushrangers reached 1-201 by stumps on Monday's second day with Rogers unbeaten on 103 and Marcus Stoinis not out on 37.

Rogers entered the Shield encounter amid mounting pressure on him retaining his Test slot, given his poor series against Pakistan when he made only 88 runs at an average of 22.

But the left-hander showed customary determination against the Redbacks as he faced 190 balls, scoring seven boundaries in his knock.

It was far from a chanceless innings for the left-hander, with several of his boundaries coming from edges.

An edge along the ground raced through gully to the fence early on his innings, and he edged through a vacant second slip when on 37.

Rogers brought up his half-century from 101 balls by edging past Redbacks wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman, who was standing up to the medium pace of Chadd Sayers.

Earlier, fellow Victorian opener Rob Quiney made 52 before he was caught and bowled by Zampa, the only Bushrangers wicket to fall for the day.

South Australia had declared their first innings some 20 minutes before lunch with Callum Ferguson top-scoring with 140 and Ludeman making 106.

Test quick Peter Siddle took 2-54 from 23 overs with Chris Tremain (2-81) and spinner Jon Holland (2-92) other multiple wicket-takers.
