Stars aiming to build momentum in Hobart

The Southern Stars have a busy schedule ahead and want to keep winning

The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have vowed they won't relax on Sunday despite having already sealed a one-day international series victory over India.

The rivals play off one final time at Blundstone Arena on Sunday and bowler Kristen Beams said it would be a chance to gain further momentum ahead of their tour of New Zealand later this month and their World T20 title defence in India in March.

"We've played really good one-day cricket on the back of a T20 series loss and with India playing well," Beams said.

"It sets us up beautifully with a lot of cricket coming up in New Zealand and India.

"For us, we have so much cricket coming up and we all want to be part of that World Cup team, so there's a lot to play for."

After posting a couple of below-par totals in the T20 series, Southern Stars coach Matthew Mott had hoped the ODI series would give his batters a chance to spend valuable time in the middle.

That has eventuated, with Alex Blackwell scoring a century and Ellyse Perry posting a career-high 90 in Canberra, before a complete performance at Blundstone Arena on Friday which saw openers Meg Lanning and Nicole Bolton share a 138-run opening stand and all members of the top six gain starts.

"Everyone who went in to bat struck the ball nicely and got a contribution and I was really pleased for Nicole Bolton in particularly, it's great to see her back in her best form," Mott told cricket.com.au.

"It's really important that even though the big prize at the end of this is the T20 World Cup, we can learn a lot from the ODIs too.

"You can have as many net sessions as you like but it's not the same as time in the middle and a couple of players once we got ahead of the rate on Friday were able to take their time and bat for a little while without the helter skelter nature of t20 cricket.

"That should hold us in good stead for the next couple of months, with a couple of good innings like that."

The Southern Stars enjoyed a well-earned day off on Saturday between their two Hobart matches and Mott said maintaining that balance on the path to their World T20 title defence would be important,

with Australia in the midst of their busiest season in recent memory.

"We're going along really well at the moment. The first couple of T20 games stunned us into action a little bit and by our own admission we probably didn't respond as well as we would have liked coming out of the WBBL.

"The energy levels and the mood in the camp have improved significantly over the last few games.

"We talk a lot about being adaptable and having that resilience which comes with constant travel and play and we've shown an ability to turn things around already against India.

"It's not all about relaxing, sometimes we do need to address the finer points of the game, but full credit goes to our staff who have read the group really well and have given the players an opportunity to relax and freshen up at the right times so they can train with purpose.”
