Star's unusual prep for Pakistan

Coyte staying indoors ahead of upcoming series

Sarah Coyte is taking her bat and ball and heading inside ahead of the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars’ series against Pakistan starting in August.

The world’s fourth-ranked Twenty20 bowler is set to compete for New South Wales in the Australian Open Indoor Cricket Championships with an eye to getting herself match fit for the Stars’ series against the world number eight in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

With a dearth of competitive cricket since returning from the side’s triumphant ICC World Twenty20 campaign in Bangladesh, Coyte believes the indoor cricket tournament will offer the perfect preparation for the outdoor game.

“I think it does nothing but good things for your skills,” Coyte said.

“It’s good for your reflexes; good for running between the wickets and communication.

“Indoor is always intense, whereas outdoor is a bit more relaxed and you’ve got more time.

“I love it.”

After beginning her cricket career indoors, the 23-year-old is excited at the prospect of getting back to her roots and inspiring the next generation to pick up the sport.

“It’s my first tournament in a while so I can’t wait,” she said.

“I’d recommend indoor cricket for anyone just starting out.

“I was about ten years old, maybe nine, when I started playing at Campbelltown Sports Centre and it was like a second home to me.

“I started because my brother (Sydney Thunder’s Scott Coyte) was playing outdoor cricket and wanted to get into indoor and I followed everything he did.

“We sort of never left it.”

Coyte will be joined in the NSW squad by Lend Lease Breakers teammate Claire Koski, the pair eyeing an improved performance from last year’s fifth-place finish.
