Sixers land Ashes hero Healy

Sydney franchise pick up Southern Stars keeper, while Thunder add allrounder Carey to books

Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy has signed with Sydney Sixers for the inaugural season of the Women’s Big Bash League.

Healy joins superstar allrounder Ellyse Perry as the second signing for the Sixers, with further names to be revealed as the tournament approached.

The 25-year-old, whose fiancé Mitchell Starc has been a member of the Sixers BBL squad since BBL|01, joins the club off the back of a successful Ashes campaign in the UK.

Quick Single: Healy targets long-term Stars dominance

With big names Perry and Healy leading the squad, the Sixers will be looking to replicate the success of the NSW Breakers, with the WBBL tournament set to run from the beginning of December to late January.

“It is fantastic to have Alyssa join the Sixers Club,” said Sixers general manager Dominic Remond. “Alyssa is a true talent and was a crucial member of the recent Ashes winning women’s team.

“She is a fabulous person and wonderful competitor and with Ellyse will form the backbone of our new WBBL team.

“Alyssa has a history with the magenta through Mitch Starc and it’s great she can now wear it in her own right.”

Healy said she was excited to join the Sixers and now can’t wait for the tournament to get underway. “I’ve been waiting for the Women’s BBL to start for a little while so to be able to sign with the Sydney Sixers, I’m pretty excited,” she said.

“I was sort of weighing up what I wanted to do (in terms of which club she wanted to sign with) – I’ve played all my cricket in NSW for a long time so I sort of tossed up whether I should go somewhere else, but to be honest the Sydney Sixers felt like home.

“I’ve been supporting them since BBL|01 with the boys so it was obviously really exciting to get the opportunity and put pen to paper and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”

Crosstown rivals Sydney Thunder also secured a signing coup over the weekend, with New South Wales Breakers allrounder Nicola Carey joining the club.

“I’m very happy to be playing for the Thunder, I’ve supported the men’s team since the Big Bash started,” Carey said.

“I’m really excited to be playing under Alex Blackwell with a few of the other girls from the Breakers.”
