No silverware, but plenty of upside for Apple Isle

Bupa Sheffield Shield

Coming off last season’s Shield victory, the Tasmanian Tigers started in fine form, knocking over eventual champions NSW Blues in the opening round. That would, however, be their last win before the Christmas break, the Tigers managing just four points from their next five matches heading into the Big Bash.

Carrying on from their strong BBL showing, Tasmania eased past Queensland to keep their Shield final hopes alive before a draw against Victoria dashed any chance they had of making the decider.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Tassie however, an Evan Gulbis double ton leading Tasmania to their biggest ever winning margin in an innings and 316 run victory over final aspirants South Australia in the last round.

Leading run-scorer: Ed Cowan – 662 runs @ 38.94

Leading wicket-taker: Sam Rainbird – 27 wickets @ 25.74

Ryobi Cup

As many wins as losses had the Tigers missing out on the finals in New South Wales, but the emergence of Rainbird, Evan Gulbis and Andrew Fekete as wicket-taking options would have heartened the Tasmanian faithful.

While another solid season with the bat from Alex Doolan may have the classy right-hander in line for national selection in the coloured clothes as well as the creams.

Cripps Tasmanian Roar

The Cripps Tasmanian Roar struggled in 2013/14, going winless across both the 50-over and 20-over competitions.

While the Roar couldn’t produce the results they were after as a team, big individual performances from Katelyn Fryett and Veronica Pyke offered the season’s main bright spots.

After a great season, Fryett was named in the Shooting Stars squad to take on England while Pyke made it a clean sweep of the major awards at the end of season dinner.

Imparja Cup

The Tasmania Imparja Cup team had mixed results at this year’s tournament, but Captain Callan Morse and Ryan Lees being awarded Black Caps as outstanding performers for the week was a big highlight for the side.
