Kohli, Tendulkar share spooky stat

Plus Haddin's fast hands, Australia's frugal bowling and Johnson's match to forget

3 – Number of batsmen from Asia who have scored three centuries in a Test series against Australia. After scoring two hundreds in Adelaide, Virat Kohli amassed 169 at the MCG, his third century of the series and highest of career. Surprisingly, the previous instance of an Asian scoring three hundreds against Australia came in the previous Test series when Younis Khan achieved the milestone. The other batsman to have achieved this feat is champion batsman Sunil Gavaskar during India’s tour of Australia in 1977.

169 – Number of runs scored by Kohli on day three, the second most by an Indian batsman in a day of Test cricket in Australia after Virender Sehwag’s 195 on Boxing Day in 2003. The other batsmen to score 150 or more in a day’s play Down Under are VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Sandeep Patil.

1029 – Number of runs Kohli has scored against Australia in Tests. He became 10th Indian to achieve this milestone and among these ten, Kohli (26y and 53d) is youngest, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record who reached 1000 Test runs against Australia aged 26 years and 248 days on the same day 15 years ago – December 28 at the MCG. Coincidently, both Kohli and Tendulkar needed 11 Tests and 19 innings to reach four figures and both had same number of centuries (5) and fifties (2).

262 – The partnership aggregate of Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli’s fourth wicket stand, the highest in Tests at the MCG. It was also India’s highest partnership for any wicket outside India since the 410-run stand between Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag at Lahore in 2006.

640 – Number of deliveries bowled by Australia before conceding their first extra during India’s innings. It wasn’t until 107th over of the innings that sundries appeared on India’s scorecard – a leg bye off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.

252 – Number of dismissals by Brad Haddin behind stumps (245 catches and 7 stumpings). He is the fourth Australian and ninth overall to have 250 dismissals in Tests, and us the second quickest to this landmark.

354 – Number of runs scored on day three, all by India with only two extras. On day two, 379 runs were scored by both teams. It marked the first instance of 350+ runs in successive days at the MCG, which has hosted 107 Tests and approximately 380 days of test cricket. Never before has more than 350 runs been scored on consecutive days at this venue.

978 – Number of runs Ajinkya Rahane has scored in his Test career. Of those, 970 have been scored outside of India as he hasn’t played at home since his debut last year at New Delhi, scoring eight against Australia.

46.88 – Mitchell Johnson’s current bowling average in this series, the second worst of his career where he has played at least three Tests, behind 52.16 against Sri Lanka in 2011.
