Finn, who was initially only ruled out of contention for the first Test against Pakistan owing to the injury, will now head home, with Chris Jordan named as his replacement.

After a period on the outer with the England set-up, Finn surged back to his devastating best during this year's Ashes, routing Australia in the second innings of the third Test with 6-79.

The 26-year-old was vying with fellow paceman Mark Wood for the third fast-bowling position in the first Test behind veteran pair James Anderson and Stuart Broad, however this injury, described by England Cricket as needing "a period of off-loading", has stymied his initial attempts to return to the side full time.

Jordan, 27, is an express right-arm quick with eight Tests and 24 ODIs to his name.

England's bowlers toiled hard for little reward on the opening day of the series, with four wickets falling for 286 runs as Shoaib Malik made an unbeaten century and Younis Khan became Pakistan's all-time leading Test runs-scorer.
