Smith's unwanted entry to '199 club'

Batsman misses milestone and becomes just the eighth player to be caught so narrowly short

Steve Smith has become just the eighth man in Test history to be dismissed for 199, falling one run short of his double century on the second day of the second Test against the West Indies at Sabina Park.

On the same ground in Kingston where Steve Waugh posted a famous double hundred two decades ago, Smith was trapped in front by a superb inswinger from Jerome Taylor to fall agonisingly short of the milestone.

Quick Single: Day Two report

It is just the 10th occasion in Test history that a batsman has scored 199 and the first since Ian Bell against South Africa at Lord's in 2008.

Smith is the third Australian to be dismissed for the score and the second in the West Indies; Steve Waugh fell for 199 in Barbados in 1999 and Matthew Elliott followed suit against England at Headingley in 1997.

Younis Khan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mohammad Azharuddin and Mudassar Nazar are the other players to be dismissed for 199 in Tests.

Zimbabwe's Andy Flower and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara have both scored 199 not out in Tests, left stranded on that score when all 10 wickets in the innings fell.

Smith resumed day two on 135 and was starved of the strike for a lot of the morning session, adding just 40 of the 92 runs scored before lunch to be 175 not out at the interval.

He began the second session with consecutive boundaries off Kemar Roach and was given good support from No.10 Josh Hazlewood as he moved towards the milestone.

He moved from 191 to 195 thanks to four overthrows, which also took him past his previous highest Test score of 192 against India late last year.

Four singles in the next four overs brought him to within one of the milestone but with the field up, an inswinging yorker from Taylor hit Smith on the foot in front of leg stump and he was given out by umpire Ian Gould.

Smith reviewed the decision but the ball-tracking technology showed the ball to be hitting leg stump and he was on his way.
