Three changes to XI for Gabba Test

Hazlewood, Starc come in for injured Harris, omitted Siddle; Shaun Marsh replaces Clarke

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will make up a new-look bowling attack for the second Commonwealth Bank Test against India, replacing an injured Ryan Harris and omitted Peter Siddle in the starting XI.

New captain Steve Smith has elevated himself to No.4 in the batting line-up with Shaun Marsh coming in for the injured Michael Clarke.

"Ryan Harris pulled up a little stiff and sore from Adelaide, he's got a slight quad-strain," said Smith.

"Darren Lehmann has always said if our bowlers aren't 100 per cent going into a match, then we won't be playing them.

"It's very unofrtunate for Ryan but hopefully he gets his body right soon.

"I think he'll be OK in a couple of days. It's just that going into a Test match if you're not 100 per cent, that's the way it goes with this team.

"He'll get a bit of work done with the physios the next couple of days and he can start running and hopefully be OK for Melbourne."

While Harris's injury from his first match back after a long layoff following knee surgery in March prevents him from taking his place at the Gabba, Peter Siddle's pace has seen him dropped for the second time in Australia's past five Tests following his ommission in the same circumstances in Cape Town last March.

"In regards to the inclusion of Mitchell Starc, we just wanted to play a bowler with a bit of extra pace and bounce," said Smith.

"Mitchell obviously went back and bowled really well in the last couple of Shield games and deserves his spot.

"It's obviously very disappointing for Peter Siddle whose been a terrific bowler over a period of time. He's certainly not out of the loop, he's still around the team and hopefully he'sll get another game soon."

With just three days break between the tomorrow's opening day in Brisbane and the end of the Adelaide Test, and just four days between the second and third Tests, the workloads of Australia's fast bowlers will be closely managed during the summer.

Hazlewood, 23, will be presented with Baggy Green No.440 Wednesday morning on the Gabba outfield ahead of play, and Smith is excited to unleash the tall, young quick on the Indian batsmen.

"It's very exciting. I've watched Josh very closely over the last couple of years at NSW and he impresses me every time," said Smith.

"I think he's only getting better and better. This pitch out here is going to suit him perfectly.

"He's very skillful for his age and I'm just looking forward to seeing him zing a few through and bowl with that extra bit of pace and get that extra bit of bounce as well so it's very exciting for Josh to make his debut."

With a green Gabba pitch set to greet the teams, Australia's seamers will be licking their lips at the prospect of bowling on a friendly pitch.

"(The Gabba) is traditionally quite a fast and bouncy wicket and it certainly looks no different out there for this Test match," said Smith.

"Hopefully after the wickets that we've played on recently in Test cricket - the Adelaide Oval and the two in the UAE - it's exciting for our fast bowlers to finally have something that'll have a bit of liveliness to it."

With his first coin toss as captain coming up in the morning, the green tinged pitch hasn't yet helped Smith make up his mind about his choice should his Indian counterpart call incorrectly.

"I think the wicket's going to be quite hard," Smith said.

"We had another look at it today and it's looking quite good, it's a little bit whiter than what it was yesterday.

"It's another one that we sleep on and have a look in the morning and see how we go from there."

Starc, 24, made his debut at the Gabba in 2011 but has struggled to hold a permanent place in the Test side.

His last Test came against Pakistan in the UAE six weeks ago, where he was recalled in place of left-arm spinner Stephen O'Keefe and took 2-142 in Australia's heavy defeat in Abu Dhabi.

That match was his first in red-ball cricket since a long injury layoff, and his returns in the Bupa Sheffield Shield since then have been impressive.

He took seven wickets in the NSW Blues' win over the West End Redbacks in Adelaide last month, and took four wickets in their win over the myFoot Dr Queensland Bulls at the SCG last week.

He also bowled well in the Carlton Mid ODI series against South Africa, taking 4-32 in Canberra to push his claims for a spot in Australia's squad for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.
