Waugh's son impresses in under 15s

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in the Waugh family, with former Australian Cricket Team captain Steve Waugh’s son Austin impressing during the School Sport Australia under 15 National Championships in Darwin.

Playing for the New South Wales squad, Austin Waugh was thrown the ball with Northern Territory 5-81 before he then ripped through the middle and lower order.

Using his inherited gift of medium in-swing, Waugh took 4-8 off 4.4 overs, the fourth coming through a sharp caught and bowled.

Young Waugh’s day was far from over though and he also took two catches at cover to reduce Northern Territory to 92 all out.

In reply, New South Wales found themselves in trouble at 4-53 on the inconsistent Marrara pitch before Waugh made a patient 17 not out batting at number six – a position his father batted at 150 times in international cricket.

Waugh said he was excited to be able to use his bowling to help his team to their second straight win of the tournament.

"I’m happy that I got a few wickets, it came off and the pitch movement helped a bit," he said.

Waugh’s figures have already eclipsed father Steve’s best one-day international return of 4-33 against Sri Lanka, something he is yet to mention to his famous dad.

"I haven’t got stuck in yet (about the bowling figures) … but I will," he said.

Steve and his wife Lynette have made the journey north for the championships with the former Test captain offering some sound advice to his talented son.

"Dad just said well done for today and before the tournament told me to trust myself and back myself," Waugh said.

The performance will put Waugh’s name in contention for the Australian under-16 squad, and he said he'd make sure famous uncle Mark Waugh - a current national selector - is made aware of his form.

"I’m not looking past these championships at the moment, (we're) just looking to win these … I’ll play my best and whatever happens happens," he said.

"I haven’t told Uncle Mark yet, I might give him a call."

Other notable performances from the rich cricketing bloodline in the championships came from the nephew of former Wisden Cricketer of the Year Ian Harvey - Mackenzie Harvey - who scored 84 for Victoria in round one and Will Sutherland, son of former Victoria fast bowler and Cricket Australia Chief Executive James Sutherland, who scored 33 against the ACT.
