Law turns down Pakistan coaching job

Dean Jones among those in the running for Pakistan coaching role after Law opted not to accept offer

Pakistan’s hunt for a new coach is set to continue, after the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed Stuart Law had turned down the position.

The PCB will now turn their attention to other leading candidates, including former Australia batsman Dean Jones and former Afghanistan coach Andy Moles, with PCB chief Shaharyar Khan confirming to the Press Trust of India (PTI) the Queenslander would not be able to take on the role.

"Yes, there are hurdles in the way of signing on Stuart Law as head coach," Khan told PTI.

"He had applied for a coaching position with us but he has now conveyed he is more interested in a consultant’s position and that he wouldn’t be able to join the team immediately."

On Wednesday it was reported the Pakistan Cricket Board had selected Law as their first choice to replace former coach Waqar Younis.

Jones, one of Australia’s finest limited-overs players and a veteran of 52 Tests, coached Islamabad to the inaugural Pakistan Super League T20 title in February.

"We are now also talking to Moles and Jones although the Board of Governors had some reservations over some candidates," Khan said.

The PCB is expected to make a decision on Friday.

Law is set to fill in as Australia’s batting coach for the upcoming Qantas Tour of Sri Lanka in place of Greg Blewett, who will miss the July-August tour due to the birth of his second child.

The Pakistan head coach position has been left vacant since Waqar resigned at the end of the ICC World T20 in India last month.

Pakistan’s next assignment is a tour of England in July, where they will play four Tests, five ODIs and one Twenty20 international.
