Law handed new coaching role

Former Queensland coach to assist Troy Cooley on Australia A tour of India

Former myFoot Dr Queensland Bulls coach Stuart Law will act as Troy Cooley’s assistant on Australia A’s tour of India in June.

Law stepped down as Bulls and Brisbane Heat head coach in January following a poor season in the KFC T20 Big Bash League that yielded two wins from eight matches while the four-day team lay rooted to the bottom of the Bupa Sheffield Shield table.

But now Law is back in the coaching circle and will work closely with Australia A’s batsmen across two four-day matches and a one-day tri-series against India A and South Africa A.

“It will be great to get my teeth back into something I absolutely love,” Law told News Limited.

“I spoke to Pat Howard and Troy Cooley and they offered me this. I am really looking forward to it.”

Law took the reins at Queensland in August 2013 when the previous coach, Darren Lehmann, was appointed head coach of the Australian men’s team.

The 46-year-old has previously coached Bangladesh and Sri Lanka national teams and hasn’t ruled out returning overseas, but says he would prefer to remain at his Brisbane home.

“It is a difficult one because my son is settled at school here,” Law said.

“I did apply for the Irish job but I decided to withdraw my application because I just didn’t want to upset my family yet again because we are really finding our feet as a family in Brisbane.

“We had a chat at home and decided we don’t want to move much further.”

Law will be re-united with four of his former Bulls charges in Australia A captain Usman Khawaja, Joe Burns, Cameron Boyce and Chris Lynn on the month-long tour of the subcontinent.

It will be the first time Khawaja has played since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a warm-up match for the Sydney Thunder prior to BBL|04.

Law played one Test for Australia, scoring 54 not out against Sri Lanka in 1995 in the same match Ricky Ponting made 96 on debut.

The right-hander helped Queensland break their 68-year Shield title drought when he captained the victorious Bulls in 1994-95.

Law also skippered the state to success in 1997-98 as well as a hat-trick of then-named Pura Cup crowns from 2000 to 2002.
