Ambris hit wicket creates Test history

West Indies debutant the first ever to be dismissed hit wicket on first ball of Test career

West Indies debutant Sunil Ambris has carved himself an unwanted slice of history amidst the carnage of the tourists' first innings in Wellington.

Ambris was capped by West Indies icon Joel Garner before New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl.

After a 59-run opening partnership, Neil Wagner carved his way through the top order with three quick wickets before lunch. That 3-79 quickly became 5-80 with a double strike in the first over after the main break that created history.

Shai Hope strangled one down the leg side to bring Ambris to the crease for his maiden Test innings, but it lasted just a single ball as the 24-year-old played back to a short ball and stood on his stumps to be dismissed hit wicket.

He became the very first batsman in the history of Test cricket to be out hit wicket for a golden duck on Test debut. Ambris is also just the sixth batsman overall to be out hit wicket for a golden duck in a Test innings.

There have been 63 players to make a golden duck on Test debut, including Ambris, with 25 caught, 19 bowled, 16 leg before, one run out, one stumped and, now, one hit wicket.

Ambris's exit came amid a collapse of 8-30 for the West Indies in the opening Test match against New Zealand.

Wagner, the Black Caps' fourth seamer used by Williamson, was the chief destroyer, picking up six wickets as the Caribbean team struggled to handle the short-pitched tactic from the Kiwis.
