Bangladesh bring in Junior's nemesis

Former India spinner Sunil Joshi named Bangladesh spin consultant for Tests against Australia

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has confirmed former India bowler Sunil Joshi has been appointed the squad's spin consultant for their two-Test series against Australia.

Joshi, a left-arm orthodox spinner, represented India in 15 Tests and 69 ODIs between 1996 and 2001, taking 110 wickets at international level and 615 in first-class cricket.

He played seven internationals (one Test and six ODIs) against the Aussies during his career and can claim some of Australia's greatest ever players among his scalps.

He dismissed current national selector Mark Waugh four times in just seven matches against him (although the Australian made 133no in an ODI against Joshi's India in 2001), Ricky Ponting three times, Steve Waugh twice and Michael Bevan once.

Joshi also won the man-of-the-match in Bangladesh’s inaugural Test against India in 2000, when he scored 92 runs and took eight wickets.

Bangladesh had targeted former Australia leg-spinner Stuart MacGill for the spin role, but officials said the veteran of 44 Tests declined the offer for personal reasons.

Joshi will join the squad ahead of their first Test against Australia, starting this Sunday in Dhaka, and will also join Bangladesh for their tour of South Africa in September and October.

The spin bowling job had been vacant since Ruwan Kalpage, a former Sri Lankan player, left last year.

Bangladesh have not played a Test against Australia since Ponting's team visited the country in 2006.
