Former Australia Test batsman Ed Cowan has struck a 104-ball century as Tasmania defeated Scotland by 186 runs in Kingston.

Cowan was ably supported by incumbent Test No.3 Alex Doolan (75 off 98 balls) and Jordan Silk (62 off 39) as the home side posted 4-303 from their 50 overs.

Scotland struggled to adjust to the conditions in their first match on Australian soil ahead of next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup, with Iain Wardlaw the only multiple wicket-taker.

The tourists’ run chase never really got going as they crumbled to be 8-61, before some late resistance helped them regain some pride to be bowled out for 117 in just 35.4 overs.

The pace of Hamish Kingston (4-15 off 7) proved too much to handle, while the left-arm orthodox of Clive Rose saw the former Bushrangers spinner finish with 4-26 off 8.4 overs.

“It was a really hard wicket to score on early, but once it dried out and a little bit of pace came into the wicket, it was a nice batting wicket,” Cowan said after his knock that included 12 fours and two sixes.

“This group’s got some really good momentum, the Hurricanes have got some really good momentum so hopefully when we can come together we can hitting the ground running come game one (of the Matador Cup).”

The two teams will meet again on Thursday, before Tasmania begin their Matador BBQs One-Day Cup campaign in Brisbane and Scotland head up to Maroochydore to continue their Australian tour against the Queensland Second XI.
