Doolan, Redmayne take top Tas awards

Tasmania batsman Alex Doolan has taken home the Ricky Ponting Medal for Player of the Year at the state's end-of-season awards night.

Doolan also won the Matador One-Day Cup Jack Simmons Medal, for his return of 362 runs at 120.66 – the fourth-highest return of the tournament – and those numbers, added to his 357 Sheffield Shield runs, with a best of 202no, saw him do enough to earn the prestigious award.

A concussion and a fractured jaw suffered in late November during Tasmania's Shield clash with Western Australia wasn't enough to halt Doolan's momentum during the 2016-17 summer.

Veteran George Bailey collected the David Boon Medal as the Shield Player of the Year, after making a career-best 200no and finishing as the third-highest run-scorer in the competition with 839 runs at 59.92.

Ben McDermott and Georgia Redmayne were named the male and female Young Players of the Year respectively, with Redmayne also named the WNCL Player of the Year.

It capped an impressive summer for Redmayne, who made the move to Tasmania from New South Wales during the off-season, seeking more opportunities with the bat and behind the stumps.

The 23-year-old scored the Roar's first ever Women's National Cricket League century, her form earning her a spot in the Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars squad which is currently touring Sri Lanka.

Memorably, McDermott led the Hurricanes to a record run chase against the Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium, scoring his maiden T20 century as Hobart successfully ran down the Renegades' 4-222.

But it was the overseas contingent who took the honours for Hobart Hurricanes Player of the Year awards, with England quick Stuart Broad shining in his first KFC Big Bash League season and White Ferns sensation Amy Satterthwaite doing likewise in the Rebel Women's Big Bash.

Broad collected eight wickets in BBL|06, while Allrounder Satterthwaite scored 323 runs at 46.14, including two half-centuries, while also picking up 15 wickets.
