Tributes flow for Raymond Van Schoor

The cricket world is mourning the passing of the Namibian cricketer

Tributes have flown in for Raymond Van Schoor, following the shock passing of the Namibian cricketer last week.

Van Schoor died on Friday - some five days after he suffered a stroke while batting during a match in the capital Windhoek - and the cricket world has been in mourning ever since.

The 25-year-old ended his career as Namibia's leading scorer in T20 cricket with 1550 runs at 29.24 in 70 matches and also as the country's most capped player with 265 games across all three formats.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson expressed his sadness at the passing of Van Schoor.

"I am shocked and saddened by this news," Richardson said.

"Raymond was a regular member of the Namibia cricket team, a promising young player with the potential to go a long way.

"On behalf of the ICC, I express my sincere sorrow and condolences to Raymond’s family and friends, as well as all those involved in Namibia cricket."

Namibia captain Stephan Baard used Facebook to write about Van Schoor.

"Last night we did not only say goodbye to a dear friend, but to a teammate and a brother," Baard said.

"Ray you were always known as a fighter and someone that never stood back from a challenge, and you were fighting right up until the final moments. We never understand these things, but we have to know that god has a plan for all of us, even though we do not always agree.

"A role model, leader, great laugh in the change room and just an amazing guy to be a part of your life. We will meet again someday and laugh at all those great moments on and off the field. But until then, rest softly buddy."

And a host of cricket stars - both current players and legends of the game - took to Twitter to express their sentiments.
