Dominant Vics face selection dilemma

With Siddle in the Test squad and Maxwell on the outer, the reigning Sheffield Shield champs are blessed with an embarrassment of riches

Victoria's selectors have a challenging few days ahead after the two-time Sheffield Shield reigning champions started their 2016-17 campaign in style.

The Bushrangers cruised to a 113-run victory over Tasmania in their day-night clash at the MCG.

With paceman Peter Siddle named in Australia's 12-man Commonwealth Bank Test squad for the opening two Tests against South Africa and talented allrounder Marcus Stoinis set to return from an injured neck, questions surround the composition of Victoria's line-up for their fixture against Queensland starting on Friday.

The Bushrangers' pace battery was on song against Tasmania, with Siddle (1-18 and 2-25), Chris Tremain (2-60 and 3-60) and Scott Boland (1-53 and 3-66) all impressing.

The experienced Dan Christian collected 4-35 from 20.3 overs in the first innings, with his haul including the key scalps of George Bailey and Alex Doolan.

Glenn Maxwell, who boasts a first-class average of 41.03 with the bat, was a controversial omission from the side which hammered the Tigers.

Fawad Ahmed was also on the sidelines after Jon Holland, who made his Test debut in Galle in August, was picked as the preferred slow-bowling option.

Victoria skipper Matthew Wade said Stoinis and Christian could both play against the Bulls at the MCG.

"Obviously one is batting three and one is batting seven, so completely different allrounders," Wade said.

"Dan, this game, bowled as well as I've seen him bowl for a long time, so he's certainly put his hand up to play as the third quick, and then Marcus can jump on the back of him as well. We've got options there.

"Maxi's always a chance to play, his record's good, so we'll just assess at the selection table.

"In terms of options with the ball, we've got some young kids outside of obviously the well-known names."

Extended highlights: Quicks secure Victoria the win

If Victoria does decide to replace Siddle with a specialist quick, left-armer Jackson Coleman could earn a call up.

Coleman made two Matador Cup appearances, returning 3-52 and 0-13 against South Australia and Western Australia.

The 24-year-old could come into selection calculations, with Jon Hastings unavailable because of a broken finger.

"I haven't spoken to the coach or selectors, but he played in the Matador Cup so he would be there or thereabouts," Wade said of Coleman.

"It's just whether or not that's the way we go or whether we go for spin."

Victoria's dominant performance was a warning shot to Shield rivals. Marcus Harris, who crossed from WA over the off-season, hit 115 and 77 in a man-of-the-match performance.

"It's an exciting team to be involved in," Wade said.

"We've got two young opening batters at the top of the order. Marcus Harris did a phenomenal job to come into a new environment and play the way he did at the MCG.

"It's a very, very good debut (for Victoria) – not quite as good as Travis Dean's was last year, but very, very close.

"Then we've got Stoinis and (Peter) Handscomb, so our top four are young players that are pushing to play for Australia."
