"The BCCI Medical Team confirms that Indian Captain Mr. Virat Kohli is presently undergoing treatment to recuperate from a strain in his right shoulder," the statement read.

"Relevant investigations have revealed that there are no serious concerns, which will hamper his speedy recovery from a strain in his right shoulder due to a fall while fielding on Day 1 of the third Paytm Test against Australia in Ranchi.

"He will continue to receive treatment, which will assist him to participate in the rest of the match."

The 28-year-old landed heavily on his right shoulder in the 40th over on day one attempting to save a Peter Handscomb boundary at wide long-on.

He immediately grimaced and squatted for a moment before he left the field feeling his shoulder with India’s team physiotherapist.

"For any rugby league fans watching, this is what they call a little burner," said Star Sports commentator and Australia Test legend Matthew Hayden.

"The ground is obviously extremely hard.

"It impinges on the top of your shoulder.

"It's not a great joint, your shoulder, it's easily the most unstable of your joints."

Maxwell's bat-breaking start to day two

India fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar said India took a cautious approach with their captain following the injury.

"What happened today was we took a precaution and make sure he doesn’t aggravate that injury,” Sridhar said.

"As far as technique of dive is concerned, it was quite an intense chase to the boundary line and ... impact was quite heavy from the momentum he was carrying so there was a shock on his right shoulder."
