Kohli to have scans on injured shoulder

India captain spends much of day one in dressing room after landing awkwardly in the field during second session

Scans have revealed no serious damage to India captain Virat Kohli's shoulder after he landed awkwardly in the field midway through the opening day of the third Test in Ranchi.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India released a statement on Kohli's injury.

"The BCCI Medical Team confirms that Indian Captain Mr. Virat Kohli is presently undergoing treatment to recuperate from a strain in his right shoulder," the statement read.

"Relevant investigations have revealed that there are no serious concerns, which will hamper his speedy recovery from a strain in his right shoulder due to a fall while fielding on Day 1 of the third Paytm Test against Australia in Ranchi.

"He will continue to receive treatment, which will assist him to participate in the rest of the match."

Kohli hurt his right shoulder attempting to stop a Peter Handscomb boundary at long-on.

Reaching the ball only metres before the rope, the India skipper put in a desperate dive and landed heavily on his shoulder.

He immediately grimaced, taking a moment before he left the field feeling his shoulder with India’s team physiotherapist.

The 28-year-old was seen with an ice pack on the injured joint in the team viewing area a short time later.

"For any rugby league fans watching, this is what they call a little burner," said commentator and Australia Test legend Matthew Hayden.

"The ground is obviously extremely hard.

"It impinges on the top of your shoulder.

"It's not a great joint, your shoulder, it's easily the most unstable of your joints."

Kohli scan results expected Friday morning

Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane took the captaincy reins for the remainder of the day's play.

India fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar confirmed after play Kohli will go for scans with the full extent of the injury to be revealed on day two.

"(Kohli) is going to undergo some scans later today and we’ll know the exact status of it tomorrow morning," Sridhar said.

"What happened today was we took a precaution and make sure he doesn’t aggravate that injury.

"As far as technique of dive is concerned, it was quite an intense chase to the boundary line and … impact was quite heavy from the momentum he was carrying so there was a shock on his right shoulder."
