Virat 'changes nothing' says Khawaja

Australia A skipper says their approach will stay the same even with by the surprise appearance of India's Test captain

Australia A captain Usman Khawaja says his team will welcome the unexpected opportunity to go up against Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli in the second four-day match against India A starting Wednesday.

Kohli is set to feature in the Chennai clash as part of his preparation for India's tour of Sri Lanka next month, his first full series in charge of the Test team.

Quick Single: Kohli to play against Australia A

The BCCI only confirmed Kohli's selection in the 'A' tour halfway through the opening match, although Khawaja said the visitors wouldn't change their plans specifically for the highly-regarded right-hander.

"(Virat) is a world-class player, but it doesn't change for us," Khawaja said after the final day of the tour opener.

"We've got lots of international experience in our side too.

"To want to be the best you've got to play against the best, so it's just a good experience for the rest of us."

The 14-man Australia A squad boasts 26 Tests between them, while Kohli has played 34 Tests of his own and has risen to the role of full-time captain with the retirement of MS Dhoni in Australia last summer.

Kohli's presence provides a rare opportunity for an internationally-inexperienced bowling attack to be made up from Gurinder Sandhu, Andrew Fekete, Sean Abbott, Stephen O'Keefe and Ashton Agar.

"This is the ideal reason we play the 'A' series because it gives our guys an opportunity to test themselves against quality opposition," Australia A coach Troy Cooley said.

"It's also a yardstick for the boys to measure themselves in challenging conditions and it's an invaluable experience, especially as most of these players are pushing for a national call-up."

The opening match of the tour finished in a draw after the home side's sporting declaration ensured a result was a possibility – albeit unlikely – on the final day.

The Aussie top order started strongly before a string of wickets ensured both sides would settle for a draw.

Quick Single: Spirited Aussies settle for draw

"I think experience is the biggest plus," Khawaja said after the match.

"I told the guys before we even started, don't worry about winning or losing, for us it's about the experience we gain here for the next time we come for an actual series, such as playing for Australia.

"That's the main goal for everyone. To play in these conditions and get experience, because we don't play in these conditions very often."

Highlights of the final day of the first match in Chennai

The match in Chennai marked Khawaja's return to first-class cricket after rupturing his ACL last summer.

The 'A' opener produced scores of 25 and 12 as he looks to again push for a Test recall, but the stylish left-hander said he was just happy to be out in the middle once again.

"It's a win for me to be out there and playing," he said.

"I've watched so much cricket that was so hard to watch, now I'm just excited to be back."

Australia A four-day squad: Usman Khawaja, Matthew Wade, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Joe Burns, Andrew Fekete, Callum Ferguson, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Stephen O'Keefe, Gurinder Sandhu, Marcus Stoinis.
