Wahab gets his revenge on Watson

Bowler has better of the battle as World Cup duel has encore in the Pakistan Super League

A long way from the grand stage of a World Cup quarter-final, Wahab Riaz has finally extracted a measure of revenge on Shane Watson.

Following their memorable duel at the Adelaide Oval nearly 12 months ago that lit up the global tournament, the pair faced off again in Dubai in the third match of the Pakistan Super League.

No longer clad in the uniforms of Pakistan and Australia, this time Wahab wore the yellow shirt of Peshawar Zalmi against the red of Watson's Islamabad United.

Their battle lasted an entertaining eight balls before the left-arm pace of Wahab claimed the prized scalp that had eluded him in Adelaide.

Brought on in the seventh over with Watson on strike, the first ball was unsurprisingly pitched short. Bounce at the Dubai stadium allowed the Australian to dab it to third man for a single.

Seemingly expecting another short ball, Watson's next delivery from Wahab didn't bounce much higher than the top of off stump – a bottom edge through to the keeper for a dot ball and a long follow through and look from the bowler, ignored by the batsman who had turned away.

The third delivery skidded through and beat the outside edge of Watson's bat – the Australian again turning to look back at the keeper and avoid any confrontation with Wahab.

A short and wide one was served up next, and latched onto powerfully by Watson only to be knocked down by the fielder at point to keep the runs to a single.

Watson was on strike when Wahab returned, the first delivery again back of a length but on a middle stump line as the Australian pulled powerfully in front of square for a boundary.

The next rapped Watson on the thigh guard as he scampered through for a leg bye.

Wahab continued to bowl short at Watson, seeking to extract what he could from the pitch. The sixth delivery to Watson was on a leg stump line, allowing the Australian to pull the ball square and run two.

The seventh ball was fuller, wider, moving away from the right-hander. Watson accepted the invitation, laying into a square drive – only to thrash it uppishly and direct a catch squarely into the hands of Mohammed Hafeez in the gully.

Watson departed for 28 from 31 balls, his side slumped at 4-55 in the ninth over and Wahab had 1-10 from 1.5 overs. In their personal battle, Wahab had bowled eight of his 11 balls at Watson, conceding eight runs before claiming the wicket.

Wahab finished with 3-23 as Peshawar beat Islamabad by 24 runs – the second defeat in as many nights for Watson's United.

Tamim Iqbal scored 51 opening for Peshawar before Islamabad's West Indies import Andre Russell picked up 3-31. Watson claimed the wicket of Hafeez in his 1-37. The Zalmi scored 7-145 in their 20 overs, Islamabad managing 9-121 in reply with Watson's 28 the top score.

Wahab found himself on a hat-trick in his third over after having Russell and Sam Billings both caught on the deep square boundary. Imran Khalid survived the hat-trick ball.
