Wasim, Waqar to reunite with Multan

Pace legends set to take on roles with new franchise in Pakistan Super League

Test legends Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis are set to reunite later this month with new Pakistan Super League franchise Multan Sultans.

The duo is set to come to terms with the Sultans later this month, with Wasim taking on the role of cricket operations director, and Waqar to be appointed head coach.

The signing of Wasim in particular is a significant coup for the new side, having poached the all-time great fast-bowling allrounder from 2015 champions Islamabad United.

Waqar, who mentored the national side as recently as April 2016, comes into the tournament for the first time, reuniting the former express right-arm fast bowler with his ex-teammate for the first time since their final playing days in 2003.

The duo took international cricket by storm in the 1990s, and went on to play 258 internationals together, taking 1,147 wickets between them.

They shared an acrimonious relationship at times but are reportedly on good terms nowadays, and are set to work closely together in their new roles at Multan.

The Sultans are owned by The Schon Group, a well-established real estate business based in Dubai.

The Pakistan Super League is set to enter its third season, with the addition of Multan making it a six-team tournament, with Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta the other five sides.

The country continues to push for a return of visits from international teams, and their hopes for such an outcome were boosted this week when it was reported that former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower would coach and select a World XV squad to play a three-match T20 series in Pakistan against the national side later this year.

After Pakistan's stunning 180-run win over arch-rivals India in the final of the Champions Trophy at The Oval last week, coach Mickey Arthur said he hoped the visit of the World XI would go ahead.

"We're scheduled to have a World XI in Pakistan in September for three Twenty20 games," Arthur said.

"So hopefully that starts paving the way for future tours. We can only hope."
