West Indies mull recall for leg-spinner

West Indies will consider recalling leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo for the Boxing Day Test, depending on the state of the MCG pitch.

The West Indies' bowlers were well below their best in the opening Commonwealth Bank Test in Hobart, and the team has lacked preparation throughout their tour.

A Cricket Australia XI compiled a total of 444 in Brisbane in the Windies' tour opener, setting the stage for a 10-wicket win.

Australia then marched to a total of 4-583 in Hobart before Steve Smith declared, thanks to an epic partnership between Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh.

Even in the weekend's tour game against an inexperienced Victorian XI in Geelong, the visitors managed to take only three wickets.

Bishoo claimed two of those and coach Phil Simmons confirmed he would be in the mix for the second chapter of the three-Test series.

"He bowled better," Simmons said.

"There was a lot more drive in his deliveries and everything like that.

"We'll see what happens over the next three days and we'll see what the MCG wicket is like, then we can make a decision about the combination we're going with."

Simmons confirmed Bishoo was fully fit despite murmurings about a finger problem.

"He hasn't bowled enough on this tour to have that issue. The last time he had that issue he bowled quite a few overs in the Test match at Dominica," he said.

"Nothing like that has come up."

Bishoo has played 15 Tests, with one of his best performances coming against Australia in Dominica earlier this year.

The 30-year-old grabbed a haul of 6-80 in Australia's first innings.

Jake Hancock, who finished 80 not out on Sunday, rated Bishoo and Jerome Taylor as the toughest bowlers he faced in the weekend's tour match.

"He (Bishoo) is a world-class bowler. He turned the ball a lot and bowled a lot of variations," said Hancock, who opens for Victorian premier cricket side Prahran.

"He was pretty difficult to get a hold of really because he was always keeping you guessing.

"He had great control as well I thought."

Taylor was guilty of committing a schoolboy error on Sunday.

The paceman was leaning on the fence with his back to play, gazing into a near-empty grandstand when the ball was hit in his direction.

However, he made up for it with the ball according to Hancock.

"Taylor bounced me a lot and he was definitely bending his back," the opener said.

"They continued to challenge me for the whole game. The whole time I batted, they tested me."

The West Indies have shifted base to Melbourne. They have Monday off but will be back in the nets on Tuesday.
