Brilliant Beaumont a Big Bash candidate

Tammy Beaumont stepped up in astonishing fashion against Pakistan, breaking records with back-to-back tons

England opener Tammy Beaumont is in the form of her career – and Women’s Big Bash League clubs could be sitting up and taking notice.

Beaumont, whose highest score heading into England’s 3-0 one-day series win over Pakistan was 44, scored back-to-back tons as her team won by margins of seven-wickets, 212 runs and 202 runs.

Her 342 runs included 104 in Worcester and 168 not out in Taunton, as she become the first England woman to score centuries in consecutive matches.

It followed her impressive form in the World T20 in India, where she was England’s second highest run-scorer behind former skipper Charlotte Edwards.

With several WBBL clubs including the Sydney Sixers looking to strengthen their batting line-ups ahead of WBBL|02, the 25-year-old from Kent could be in their sights.

"We’d really like to add another batter to our squad and to our line up," Sixers captain Ellyse Perry said last month.

"I think at different points last season we were one batter short."

None of the WBBL clubs have officially confirmed their signings for the upcoming summer - although the Sydney Thunder have all-but secured India's Harmanpreet Kaur - but the Sixers have at least one international spot available on their roster, while the Melbourne Renegades would also be keen to add to their batting ranks, after boasting a spin-heavy line-up in WBBL|01 and losing out to the Stars in the race for ex-Aussie player Jess Cameron.

Adelaide Strikers may also be searching for a new international batter, with England star Sarah Taylor taking an indefinite break from the game as she battles anxiety.

Meanwhile, Hobart Hurricanes will be desperate to retain the services of new England captain Heather Knight, who averaged 88 and snared five wickets for the Pakistan series.

The 3-0 series win was the perfect start to Knight’s reign and crucially, moved England to third on the International Cricket Council’s ODI Championship table, putting the team in a strong position to claim automatic qualification to next year’s one-day World Cup.

"We have only played three matches (in this season), and we aren’t looking too far ahead," Knight said after the third ODI.

"It’s been a brilliant effort so far, but now comes the test of maintain this level of performance as we build towards a home ICC Women’s World Cup next summer."

Coach Mark Robinson was also happy with the move up the championship table.

"Every international game of cricket is important, but it was clearly very important that we secured maximum points from these three ICC Women’s Championship matches against Pakistan, to put ourselves back into the mix at the top of the table," Robinson said.

The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars remain on top of the table with two rounds remaining, four points ahead of West Indies.

The final two rounds of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Championship are scheduled to be played between September and November, with Australia to travel to Sri Lanka in September before hosting South Africa in November.
