Bio

Allrounder John Mooney was one of the heroes of Ireland’s famous 2011 Cricket World Cup win against England when he took 4-63 and clinched victory with an unbeaten 33 from 30 balls.

Mooney made his one-day international debut alongside brother Paul in Ireland’s maiden ODI against England in 2006 and has since played more than 50 matches. But his international career stretches back to 2001, when he earned his first Ireland cap.

Mooney was part of the 2007 World Cup squad, playing two matches, but took a break from international cricket after the tournament to concentrate on his electrical apprenticeship.

He returned to prior to the 2011 World Cup and enjoyed good form through the tournament, scoring 58 runs and taking 10 wickets in six matches.

After leaving Ireland’s tour of the West Indies in February 2014 to take a break due to a stress-related illness, Mooney later revealed he had struggled with depression.

But Mooney returned to cricket later in 2014 and scored an impressive 96 against Scotland in September, before travelling to Australia, New Zealand and Dubai as part of the World Cup warm-up tour.
