Profile

In a squad featuring the likes of Kane Richardson, Joe Mennie and Gary Putland, few can argue that Chadd Sayers is the official spearhead for the South Australia Redbacks.

After playing a handful of games in 2010 and 2011, Sayers became a permanent figure in the South Australian set-up in a famed 2012/13 campaign.

Running through the statistics quickly, Sayers finished the Bupa Sheffield season with 48 wickets at an astounding average of just 18.52. He was the runaway leading wicket taker, and only just missed out on being named the competition’s player of the year.

Sayers seemed to be South Australia’s good luck charm in 2012/13, with his standout efforts often translating to success on the field.

Match figures of 6/82 saw his side hold on for a thrilling 15 run win against the Tigers in Tasmania. His 4/29 in the first innings rattled the hosts, who struggled to handle his swing on the green deck.

After taking six wickets at the MCG earlier in the season, Sayers proved to be the difference once again when the Bushrangers travelled to Adelaide in early 2013.

The seamer ripped through the Bushrangers with a stunning 6/49 in the first innings, before chipping in with two wickets in the second dig. His heroics with the ball helped set up the famous one wicket win that ended a three year drought on home turf.

More recently, Sayers terrorised NSW in back to back Shield games. He picked up five-wicket hauls in the first innings of both matches, with the NSW top-order unable to counter his late swing.

With most of his wickets being bowled or LBW, Sayers has proven that line, length and a little bit of swing are the keys to success on Australian pitches.

There were no surprises when Sayers was awarded the Neil Dansie Medal as South Australia’s player of the season.
