Profile

At just 24, Glenn Maxwell is one of the most promising cricketers in Australia’s vast stocks. A big hitting batsman who can bowl handy off-spin, Maxwell has already featured prominently in the ODI and T20 sides, while he has recently broken into the Test team.

In a career that has only spanned 17 First Class matches, Maxwell already boasts the fastest half century in the Ryobi Cup.

A blistering 19 ball knock against the Tasmania Tigers launched his name into the selection stratosphere, with the panel excited by the Victorian’s rare talents.

Later that year, he proved he could handle the longer form of the game, when he made a solid 103* against South Australia in the Bupa Sheffield Shield.

Maxwell was rewarded with a spot in the ODI side for the series against Pakistan, where he scored 124 runs in four appearances.

The “Big Show” is well known for his big-hitting, and he has already cleared the fences 11 times for Australia in the 50 over game.

The Victorian all-rounder pipped David Hussey for a spot in the World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka, where he received limited opportunity with both bat and ball.

Selectors showed that Maxwell was on the horizon by picking him for the Australia A game against South Africa. The Victorian star didn’t disappoint, scoring 64 and taking 2/70 against the world’s best test team.

Although he didn’t get too many opportunities with the bat, Maxwell did pick up three wickets in the two game t20 series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Opening the batting against the West Indies in Perth, Maxwell blasted an unbeaten 51 off 35 to confirm his status as one of the biggest hitters in the country. His knock included 48 runs from boundaries.

A duck in the following match was forgiven when he picked up four wickets and produced a run out at the WACA.

Maxwell made his Test debut during the much maligned tour of India earlier this year. The wickets of Vijay, Kohli, Jadeja and Dhoni couldn’t prevent an innings defeat in Hyderabad, while a further three scalps in Delhi failed to inspire his teammates.

The Mumbai Indians must have liked what they saw from the all-rounder, after they forked out over $1,000,000 dollars for Maxwell at the IPL auction.

Apart from his form with the bat and the ball, the young Victorian has already proven to be one of the country’s finest fielders. His catching is first rate, while he possesses one of the deadliest arms in the game.
