Player Story

What James Taylor lacks in height, he more than makes up for in talent.

The 168cm Nottingham batsman made his first-class debut in 2008 but it was 2009 where Taylor really started to make a name for himself at Leicestershire, scoring 1184 runs including three hundreds and six fifties.

Spots in the England Performance Programme and England Lions followed and Taylor’s name was thrown around as a possible replacement at No.6 for England after Paul Collingwood’s retirement, but the role went to Eoin Morgan.

His one-day international debut came against Ireland in 2011 but his second chance did not come until September 2013 when he again played against Ireland.

Taylor moved to Nottinghamshire in 2012 and two Test match appearances came in the same year, where his highest score was 34 against South Africa.

An impressive 2014 domestic season was enough to reignite Taylor’s international career and he was included in the squad for the November tour of Sri Lanka, where he played four matches and scored two fifties.

In 2016 Taylor was forced to retire after being diagnosed with an incurable heart condition. He finished with one century and seven fifties in ODIs and two half-centuries from seven Test matches.
