Player Story
Having struggled to break into a Victorian side that included Bryce McGain, Jon Holland and Cameron White, left-arm orthodox spinner Michael Beer headed west to join Western Australia in 2010.
He took three wickets on his first-class debut in October, ironically against Victoria, before he was rushed into Australia’s Test side for the New Year’s Test against England at the SCG, despite having played only a handful of Sheffield Shield matches.
His call-up came at the public behest of Shane Warne, who had been impressed with Beer’s match haul of five wickets against England earlier in the summer.
Having been denied the wicket of Alastair Cook after a video review revealed a no-ball, Beer’s first Test wicket came when he dismissed Paul Collingwood.
He returned to the Test side over 12 months later in the West Indies, surprisingly opening the bowling in both innings of the second Test and taking two wickets.
