Profile

Following in the footsteps of Dirk Nannes and Tom Cooper, Tasmania’s Timm van der Gugten had successfully fought his way into the Dutch national side.

Debuting for the NSW Blues in 2011, the Dutchman picked up his only Sheffield Shield wicket in his side’s crushing win against the Western Warriors.

The match preceded his first ever Ryobi Cup game, where he also picked up a wicket in another NSW victory.

The 22 year old enjoyed a prolific 2012 playing for the Netherlands. In his first game in the Caribbean T20, van der Gugten picked up five wickets against Sussex.

Impressive performances followed, but none more memorable than his side’s heart-stopping win on the last ball against Bangladesh.

The Dutchman was the pick of the bowlers with 3/18 as Bangladesh was restricted to a moderate 128. Van der Gugten looked to have won his side the match when his six brought the Netherlands within two runs of victory. In a cruel twist of fate, he was adjudged LBW on the penultimate delivery, leaving Ahsan Malik to smash a boundary to win the game at the death.

Several matches for Tasmania in the Futures League helped van der Gugten condition himself on Australian pitches. Without being flashy, he fought his way into the Ryobi Cup side for matches with NSW and Western Australia.

The seamer picked up two scalps in the high scoring contest against the Warriors, but couldn’t force his way into the Shield side for the final with Queensland.

Van der Gugten returned to the Dutch side for its tour of Namibia in April, where he once again excelled. His ten wickets in the first-class match weren’t enough as Namibia won by 82 runs.

However, three wickets in the opening 50 over match were telling as the Netherlands held on for a 31 run win.

With a stack of international experience under his belt, van der Gugten should be a handy asset for the Tigers in 2013/14.
