The most graceful of India’s ‘Fab Four’ batsmen, VVS Laxman has always had a mean streak when facing Australia.

His Test average is close to 10 runs better than his career mark of 46 whenever he spies baggy greens in the field. In 25 games against them he has registered an imposing six hundreds and 11 fifties.

The most memorable of those innings was his 281 in Kolkata in 2001, which turned the match and the series, and ended Australia’s record-breaking winning streak. He also breezed to an unbeaten 200 in Delhi in 2008 and in Mohali two years later ensured India won by a wicket with 73 not out while carrying a bad back.

Watch out for him in Sydney, too, where he has three hundreds at a Bradmanesque average of 96.2 in three games.
